On the 6th of September together with Avery Dennison, a global packaging and materials manufacturer, we have inaugurated Europe’s largest Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) platform and Thermal Storage unit at its Turnhout, Belgium production plant. The renewable energy project features a CST platform with 2,240 mirrors, a solar field peak yield of 2.7 GWh thermal power, and six thermal storage modules with a 5 MWh capacity. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Azteq, ENERGYNEST, and Campina Energie, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 9% annually and supply up to 100% of the factory’s heat demand during sunny periods. Financing came from various sources, including the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program. Additionally, the project promotes sustainability by using sheep for “solar grazing” to support biodiversity on site.
